Joan Baez - Silver Dagger

This is a stunning introduction. First song, first album. This was the one that started it all.

It broke the 1950s mould, broke the idea that women needed make-up and bouffant hairdos, or had to smile all the time. This opened the door for thousands of introspective girls to sit around at home listening to simple mopey folk songs. It opened the door to popular music for folk singers, for Bob Dylan and the 1960s. This is the mould for Laura Marling and the like. And thank heavens for all that.

And it really is an amazing cover version, beautifully sung, recorded like the whole of her first album pretty much in a single take when she was just 19 years old and singing in Boston and Cambridge cafes and had just made a breath-taking first appearance at the Newport Folk Festival.

I’m reading a book about Joan and Mimi Baez and 1960s Greenwich Village at the moment. Feels a bit like Brighton over the last few years, but way back then that was the only place.

Drop Anchor by Martin Rossiter

This is beautiful. I honestly believe that Martin Rossiter’s live album is even better than the studio versions. This is how I remember seeing him in a small intimate space, being blown away. Just Martin with Robin Coward’s beautiful piano accompaniment.

Go get this album, it’s gorgeous.
